Prior to beginning my journey to healthy hair, some might've called my hair long.  Long is such a subjective word.  My hair hovered just above armpit length, or APL, as it's called on hair forums across the Internet.  It was relaxed and breaking off by the handfuls whenever I combed it.  But, because my hair seemed thick and long, I wasn't bothered by all the broken hairs on the floor.  This was normal..or so I thought.

Then I found the wonderful world of healthy hair care and realized that, even tho hair sheds at a rate of 50-100 strands a day, breakage was not something to be overlooked.

African American hair has the least number of cuticles than the hair of any other ethnicity.  Because of this, our hair loses moisture at a faster rate causing the hair to be dry and brittle, easily splitting and breaking.  To combat dryness, we often look to greases and oils to moisturize our hair.  Most of these store-bought products, which often contain mineral oil and petroleum, are designed to make our hair look moisturized but actually locking the moisture out of our hair.  So, what does that mean? It means we still have dry brittle hair that breaks because we're fooled into thinking it's moisturized.

So then, what's the solution?  The solution is to stop being fooled and treat your hair to the best moisture there is.  Water.  And one of the best ways to infuse our hair with moisture is through stream treatments.  I know.  The idea of steam on black hair seems a little frightening but, it's really the difference between dry, brittle hair and supple, healthy hair.

After thoroughly researching, purchasing and using my steamer for the past year, I've decided to review my favorites.  Let's get started.

Pros

First of all, the steamer arrived quickly and boy was I excited! Uh, this would be a good time to mention that I got free shipping.  It was easy to assemble and had very few small pieces. I had it set up within minutes and was pleased to find that I was able to use tap water instead of the distilled water that some models require.  Plus!  Height is easily ajusted and this model heats up quickly.  Another plus! 

I couldn't wait to try it out so, I whipped up a moistuizing deep conditioning treatment and tried it out.  The steamer has a 30 minute timer which allowed me to relax and not worry about being under long enough.  A 30 minute treatment is perfect.  The steamer also cuts dying and henna times in half.

Cons

The only drawback to having this model is the space requirement for storage.  If you have space for this professional-sized steamer, then by all means, this is the one for you.  But, if space is limited in your home, you may want to consider a tabletop model .

Conclusion

After my very first treatment, my hair was like butter.  The steam causes the cuticles to lift and allows the deep conditioning treatment to pentrated deeply into the hair shaft, providing the much-needed moisture that my hair had been missing.  Even after rinsing it out and allowing my hair to dry, my locks felt completely moisturized, supple and healthier.

I now do deep conditioning steam treatments at least once a week and breakage is a fading memory.  I'm convinced that keeping my hair properly moisturized has helped me to retain the long lengths that my hair has grown.  .
